Exploring the history of the groove

“I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross

Bringing Disco back from beyond the grave, I’m Coming Out came out with a bang. It is a song long since hailed an anthem within the gay community. Did you know that it almost wasn’t? Diana asked the members of the band Chic to write a song for her. They found their inspiration within three drag performers dressed up as Diana at a New York City bar. The producers neglected to tell her the public would think she was gay. She recorded the song, and found out before it was released of the potential backlash. Despite her anger, she decided to release the song anyway. It ended up climbing the charts, and being one of her biggest hits. The producers claim that was the only time they lied to an artist like that.
