Exploring the history of the groove

Over the Rainbow

From the classic film, The Wizard of Oz this is “Over the Rainbow”. It is sang and performed by Judy Garland. She is well known for her past career in film and music, including the role of Dorothy. The song is written by Yip Harburg and the music is by Harold Arlen. It is from the opening of the movie, when Dorothy runs into trouble with her dog, Toto. Dorothy sings about a place beyond a rainbow, full of dreams and no troubles.

Although this song is about Dorothy’s frustrations, it almost did not get put into the film. The Chief Executive and Producer of the movie, thought it “slowed down” the pace. But, the Associate Producer and the vocal coach did not give up. They did anything for the song to be put into the movie. Their efforts for success with this song did not go unnoticed. “Over the Rainbow” is one of the greatest songs in the 20th century, and was even adopted by American troops during World War II. It also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
