Exploring the history of the groove

“Sway” by Dean Martin

Dean Martin’s song “Sway,” is an American favorite. However, this was not the original version of the song. The song, originally written in spanish by Luis Demetrio, was recorded by Pedro Infante, with the title “Quien Sera,” which translates to “who will be.”  The original lyrics translate to a meaning about a man wondering if he will ever find love again, and if he does, he wonders who it will be. In 1954 Norman Gimbel changed the sad tone of the lyrics to an upbeat meaning about a man singing to his dance partner about the way that she sways. “Sway” became one of Dean Martin’s signature songs and has been recorded by many other artists like Michael Buble and the Pussycat Dolls, who have had similar success.
