Exploring the history of the groove

“Close to You” by Frank Sinatra

One of the most beloved vocal artists in history, Frank Sinatra, is known for his magical voice and his award-winning songs. One of Frank’s hidden gems is “Close To You”, recorded in 1943. The tempo and lyrics embody a heart yearning to be close to the one it loves. It was recorded during the strike of the American Federation of Musicians, when musicians refused to work with record labels. Sinatra took this as an opportunity to do something interesting – record a song acapella. The melody provided by the vocal group sings in harmony with Sinatra’s soft voice.  It is as if the vocal group makes Sinatra’s emotions stronger. It is like an emphasis on love. A melancholy harmony through the voices of Sinatra and the vocal group tie this song together – sans instruments.
