Exploring the history of the groove

“Miss Vixen” by Conway’s Band

Patrick Conway and his Famous Band exemplify the band music of the 1910’s. Their version of the popular song “Miss Vixen” is a particularly interesting piece. It’s a unique, yet simple song that showcases Conway’s mastery of his craft.

He leads his band in rousing rendition of the song, each instrument loud and clear, despite the limited technology of the time. This song in particular was written for the foxtrot, a new & popular dance at the time. In fact, it was invented in 1914, one year before Conway’s Band recorded this song. It’s a fast dance that goes along well with “Miss Vixen”’s energy. The dance, and big band music like that of Conway’s Band, matched the vibrant party culture that defined the 1910’s & 20’s.
